'Bella's Book of Shadows'
Last week I spoke about The Elements, for a quick recap click the link below:
This week I am going to talk about Sacred Spaces.
If you are serious about your craft, then you will probably want a private space to use where you won't be disturbed. If you aren't lucky enough to have a separate room that you can designate to your practice, curtain an area off in a room where you are least likely to be disturbed while practicing.
How you decorate this space is entirely up to you, it's your personal choice.
You also have the option of working out in nature, such as your garden (if you have one) there are many wonderful idea's of creating permanent pentagrams outside with mosaics, rocks, bricks, or making a circular patio, you can chalk your pentagram on if you don't want anyone knowing what you're doing as it's easy to wash off.
Here is a list of a few things that you will need for your sacred space:
The Witches Tool Box
Altar: A table, chest of draws or area on which to do spell work, any size of your choosing. What fits your purpose... is ok.
Altar Broom: A small broom for cleansing the altar.
Altar Cloth: Place on/over the altar prior to adding candles. The colour of the altar may change depending on what you want to achieve.
Amulet: A personal object to wear for protection/luck/focus. Helping to channel your thoughts and magick.
Bell: Used to call spirits and to open/close a ceremony. Also used in space clearing.
Black Salt: (Witches Salt) Used in protecting a boundary or your circle.
Book of Shadows: This is your personal BoS to log all your spell-work, thoughts, feelings and outcomes plus any psychic influences you may feel. It's a Witchy Journal. It's also a good thing to do, as it's no possible to remember everything. it doesn't have to a big black leather book with a lock and key. Any note book is fine. You can always get the aforementioned at a later date.
Broom: Used for cleansing sacred spaces and a few other things if you are part of a coven.
Candles: There are many types such as: Beeswax, Dinner, Votive, Tea Lights, Shaped (Cats, male, female etc...), Jar candles, use what is appropriate for your spell and choose the right colour too.
Candle Snuffer: Use this to extinguish the candle without extinguishing the magick. Very improtant, never blow candles out - always snuff!
Cauldron: A cast iron pot with a lid used to burn charcoal discs and herbs etc...
Chalice: Used in ceremonies for water or wine for blessing, offering, drinking...
Charcoal Disc: For burning herbs, incense mixes/powders or resins on.
Crystals: A basic selection of crystals. Can be used on the altar or in spell-work and in the mojo bags with the herbs. There are many uses for crystals, if you'd like to know a little more check out my other posts.
Incense: For burning during rituals and space cleansing although you are more likely to use a smudge stick of white sage for that.
Herbs: Use the dried herbs in mojo bags or as offerings, mixing with bath salts for ritual baths, etc... Some herbs are quite dangerous, so you need to be fully aware of what you're handling ~ research is most important.
Oils: There are many kinds of oils. Use either the pure essential oils and mix your own blends or there are ready mixed oils that can be bought for whatever purpose you may need. Uses are for anointing candles, incense/herb mixes, anointing objects, making magickal washes, bath rituals, massage, etc... Again, please research what you are using, as some essential oils are not suitable for pregnant women (if you are expecting) and the other thing is, don't apply them neat to your skin always use a base oil for the dilution.
Wand/s: A bit of a cliche but you still need one. These can be wood, crystal, metal, whatever your personal preference, there are lots to choose from, you just need to find one that feels right to you. Go with your instinct to get the righ one for you.
That should get you started but you will find that you add things all the time and if you are going to work outside, you can make an 'On The Go Kit' which would be the basic tools in an easy to carry bag, box or case .
It's best to keep all herbs in small glass jars labelled accordingly and all oils racked up neatly. Candles and incense can be kept together and crystals kept in small bags with the names printed on, otherwise you could forget what they are (especially if you have a lot!) The more organised you are, the preparation takes less time.
Also please keep all tools safe and out of the way when not using them, this is very important if you have pets or children and can't lock or secure your room when not in use. Be responsible, think of others as some of the herbs and resins can be very dangerous (poisonous) and need careful handling (more about that in another post). Also the tools are not kiddy or pet friendly, it's always better to err on the side of caution and think better safe than sorry!
So there you have it, how to create your own sacred space and some of the tools you'll need. Next time we'll do Circle Casting and in the meantime if you have any questions, leave a comment and I'll get back to you.
So until next week, be good and if you can't be good be careful!
