The Sunday Spotlight ~ Author Interview ~ Jennifer Dean

The Sunday Spotlight

Author Interview

This week I'm delighted that Jennifer Dean, author of the fabulous novel 'Bound' is here.

Talking with Jennifer

The Sunday Spotlight

Firstly can you tell us a little about yourself?

My story is a little different. I wasn’t that child who said I wanted to write stories when I grew up. In fact, I was quite the opposite. I wasn’t even a fan of reading and was quite irritated with the idea of teachers trying to force me in school. But when I was seventeen my brother decided a different approach. Instead of asking me to read things, he began to just tell me about the stories he was reading. One that particularly caught my interest was none other than the story of the boy wizard himself, Harry Potter. A story that intrigued me enough to find out more and for the first time pick up my brother’s own copy. And from the moment I dove into it, my ignorance of books vanished and my love began. It would be nearly five years later that I would discover an even deeper passion. A passion to actually write novels to entertain others the same as I had been.

What inspired you to start writing novels for your chosen genre?

I tend to write Young Adult Fantasy because it’s the books I love to read myself.

Are you working on anything new right now?

Yes. Book two of the series, which will be called Withered Roots.

Can you offer any advice to the fledgling authors, just starting out?

It may sound too simple but just write. See what your imagination comes up with. Don’t try and force what others may like, just write what you want to read. You’ll carry so much more passion for a story that way.

What is your all-time favorite novels?

I can’t name just one but I can say that my favorites tend to be series novels. I love to invest in characters over a number of books like Harry Potter, A Wrinkle in Time, Chronicles of Narnia, Twilight, Vampire Diaries, etc.

Do you have a favorite quote?

There are so many great quotes, it’s hard to pick just one! One of my favorite things to do is look up quotes. I find so much past inspiration. What’s on my mind right now is from the late Walt Disney. “All our dreams can come true, if we have courage to pursue them.”

If you could be any character in any novel, who would it be and why?

Great question. I always thought about how cool it would be to live in a world of magic. I’m still waiting for my letter from Hogwarts. With that in mind, I would say Hermione Granger was always an appealing character for me. Besides being one of the brightest witches of her age she is also strong and loyal to those she loves.

How do you come up with the Titles for your novels?

I think titles and names are almost harder than the actual novel at times. For me I have to really ponder the main theme that I want the reader to connect with. I love to incorporate a title that holds more than one meaning to the story.

When working on your current novel, were there any moments when you thought:- OMG what am I doing?

Plenty. But I have to say my proudest accomplishment was looking at the printed out first draft. I couldn’t believe I had actually finished something, let alone a whole novel. That was the moment I knew that I had discovered my lifelong passion and career.

What is your preferred method of writing:-  The plot pre-planned from day one, or just go with the flow and see what happens next?

I love to sit down and write a basic outline to get the juices flowing. Once I start, I love seeing where my imagination will take off with the story. A lot of times I will be outlining the beginning and get an idea for the middle or end.

Which type of book do you prefer to read?

A physical book, whether it be paperback or hardback. I love that accomplished feeling when you can see how far you’ve come with reading each story. Plus, I have to admit it’s fun to see each book on my shelf as if it were a personal trophy.

Do you have any weird writing rituals?

As funny as it sounds, I need to be in shorts. I don’t know why but my legs need to be comfortable in order to really let myself focus in on my writing.

Do you have any input in the Cover design of your novel?

I had the idea of what I wanted to portray and Lulu let me search through their million photograph database until I found something I felt connected with the story.

What is the best thing about writing for you?

I love the feeling I get when a scene of a story comes to me. I can feel the rush of excitement and thrill run through me as I type. I can feel my passion rekindled.

If you didn’t write, what would you do instead to fill the creative void?

I would want to be involved with film. Before I began writing I pursued an interest with film production and loved it. I was intrigued by the idea of how things worked behind the scenes. If writing hadn’t come along I would probably still be considering moving to Los Angeles to work on bigger movie sets.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I’m so indecisive and again I have to split my vote. I would love to go to London for its history, Paris to practice my French(je ne parle pas bien français), and Ireland to just simply visit my own Irish roots. Perhaps author Emma Meade and I could swap houses like Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz in The Holiday. ;)

Thanks for having me Bella!
