Author Bio:

My name is Shannon McRoberts.  I am an independent artist, author, and poet.  I have been self-publishing books of all kinds since 2005.    My first book was a poetry book called Poetry for the Chronically Heart Broken and Depressed.  That book has since been replaced with a more robust collection called Erosion of the Heart.  This book is also available in paperback and eBook formats!

My first ever sci-fi book, The Secret of Genetic Corp X, has been compared to Blade Runner.  I also recently re-released this book in paperback.

My favorite books, The Daughter of Ares Chronicles, feature Athine, an immortal born goddess that I created for the series.  In these stories, I take mythologies of all kinds and turn them on their ears!  You think you know about gods, dragons, and vampires?  Think again!

When I am not working or creating fantasy worlds for my characters to live in, I enjoy being lost in MMORPGs, good books, Poser, and the company of my friends and family.

I currently live in Kentucky with my wonderful husband and beautiful daughter.

Short Excerpt:

“Athine, hold the sword in one hand and cast a spell with the other!”  My mother, Raelin, was always barking orders.  It was always practice and then practice some more.  Didn’t she know how bored I was?  I had been practicing for eons to protect a land that was at peace.  I could cast magic with my eyes closed and my fighting skills were second nature to me.  Why did I need to practice so much if my skills were already honed?
“Mother, this is useless.  No one has attacked Olympus, Draosia, or Ximira for several centuries.  Why must I keep practicing to be a protector of the lands with these poorly made weapons?  They break when I use them.  How can I possibly fight with this stick?”
“Athine, you are a goddess of war born from three different bloodlines.  You must to live up to your legacy.  That is why you have to keep practicing.  I do not know why the weapons keep breaking.  Maybe if you focused more on using your Sh’cersay and less on your poor attitude the weapons would perform better.”
Ah yes, my ever present poor attitude.  Perhaps it was borne out of sheer boredom.  I had no desire to be a warrior protector.  That was supposed to be my mother’s job.  Yet, she kept trying to make it mine. Something about a vision or prophecy; I never really paid attention.
“Athine, stop day dreaming.  Andraste and Sabrina will be here tomorrow for your A’samrad.  Do you want to embarrass your grandmother by not completing the rite of passage?   As a potential ruler of Ximira and maybe even Olympus you are expected to do well.  Anything less would be an embarrassment to the bloodlines; all three of them.”
“Embarrassment?  Potential ruler?  Has anyone asked me if I cared lately?  I practice day in and day out just for the possibility that I may be ruler of a humdrum, peaceful country.  Maybe if I did fail the A’samrad you all would let me be.  I have no desire to be a ruler.   I do not care that my entire family is of noble immortals that love to rule.  I want to see other worlds.  I want to live a life of adventure.”
How much clearer could I get?  I had no desire to rule any of these lands, yet they all hoped I would rule one day.  Any of my other siblings, cousins, aunts, or uncles would love to play this role.  I was meant for so much more, but alas no, becoming a “ruler” keeps being dumped on my lap.  I secretly wished I could fail the A’samrad and become an embarrassment.  That way I could go off on an adventure and discover what lay beyond the walls of our palace.  I knew there were harsher worlds out there ready for me to conquer.  I just had to get out of this world to find them.

Author  Interview:

Hi Shannon and welcome to my blog

Are you working on anything new right now and can you tell us more?
I am currently writing Cursed Bloods, which is a follow up to Verses of Athine.  It will focus more on the vampires and dragons and expand the history of the N’Loron.  It may even be the beginning of the end of the series.  I haven’t figured that one out yet :)

Who is/are your all-time favourite author/s?
Anne Rice will always hold that spot b/c she was the first author that got me wanting to read.

How do you come up with the Titles for your novels?
Usually it is something very pragmatic...like what that book is about.  The Narkurru features a demon called a Narkurru.  The Blood Sisters features two blood sisters and tells the origin of vampires.  The Beginning is the first book in the series.

What is your preferred method of writing:-  The plot pre-planned from day one, or just go with the flow and see what happens next?
It used to be just sit down and see what happened.  That was before I wanted to turn my books into a cohesive series.  Verses of Athine was actually re-edited to be more cohesive and for Cursed Bloods I actually had to “research” my books to make sure my connections and thoughts were very much in sync with the other ones.  I am one of those readers that will be like I don’t think that is what happened before and will go back and re-read a book to make sure the plot points match up.  I don’t like it when they don’t, so I am trying to make sure mine match.  Writing a series is hard if you are going for cohesive continuity.

Do you like to write while listening to music and if so, does your book have particular playlist you’d like to share?
My playlist is whatever is in the phone MP3 player.  I have a wide variety of tastes.  I like anything from rock music to classical.  I have lots of soundtracks and other things.  30 Seconds to Mars, The soundtrack to The Crow, Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Korn, Kid Rock, Aerosmith….it goes on...

Which type of book do you prefer to read?
a. ebook
b. paperback
c. hardback
d. Non – I listen to audiobooks!

I prefer eBook because I can go anywhere with it and can get it instantly.  I do still like paper books, but they collect dust in my house and take up room.  I can have a bazillion eBooks and still have room for more :0)

Do you have any input in the Cover design of your novel?
Yes, I designed it myself. I want my books to be as much of my creation as possible.  I actually got into my hobby of fantasy art because I was looking for a way to make book covers.  These days there are sites with wonderful covers just mocked up ready to be bought, back when I first wrote my original draft of Daughter of Ares (later The Beginning) there was none of that stuff and eBooks were non-existent.  The market has changed, but I have too much fun making my own original art.

How many novels/books do you typically read in a month?
It depends on what is going on in my life.  Sometimes I can read 2 to 3 a week. Sometimes I won’t read any.  If I am writing I tend to try not to read anything that might influence me.  If I am bored I can read 10 to 15 books easily.

Apart from writing, do you have any other hobbies that you’d like to share with us?
As I mentioned before, I like to do fantasy art renders in Poser and Photoshop.   I have quite a collection of art available to be looked at and I recently started selling some of my prints at deviant art.

What’s your least favourite part of the writing process?
Finding the time and energy to write it all out.  It is hard with a 4 year old and full time job.

How long does it typically take for you to write a novel?
Depends on the time I have available.  I wrote a novella once in like 2 days time.  I can write upwards of 10K words in a good weekend when I can stay up late and am really inspired.  Sometimes I don’t write anything.   Currently Cursed Bloods is over 30K words and I’m still going.  I hate to write as if it were a job.  I’m a very emotional artist.  I have to be motivated and inspired.

Are you a:
  1. Laptop Writer
  2. Desktop Writer
  3. iPad Writer
  4. Pen and Paper Writer

I am a hybrid author...A and D.  I have to jot down some ideas the old fashioned way before they run away when I’m doing boring things like working!

If you had a choice  – a dream come true - which would be your preference: Your books serialised  -  a weekly show or made into movies?  I would like to see my books turned into movies.  I think they would work well as a movie and you could pack in a lot of special effects and cool characters.

Can you tell us why you think we’d love to read your novel?
Because it is different.  It is something like Xena and Buffy, but then again is completely different.  It takes mythology of all kinds and re-invents them.  It doesn’t stay within the rigid boundaries that most fantasy/mythology books tend to stick to.
