Breaking Ties

Book I The Lost Colony Series

Jo Grafford

Publisher: Astraea Press - 16 Oct 2013

Product Description

A cursed island, a chilling conspiracy, and an unforgettable love story. The 115 colonists on Roanoke Island couldn't GPS, skype or twitter their ultimate destination back to their families and friends in 16th Century England. But modern laser technology has finally uncovered a clue - hidden beneath a patch on an ancient map at the British museum - that leads us to their whereabouts. Considered "lost" for centuries, these brave pioneers finally reveal the rest of their story in Book One of the Lost Colony Series.

Rose Payne's world is left in tatters after a disastrous betrothal, making her an easy target for recruiters to the Colonies. Using every cent she has, Rose sails for the New World and a fresh start, vowing to never again fall for a wealthy man.

Returning from a diplomatic tour in London, Chief Manteo is bewitched by the fiery-haired ship's clerk and determined to overcome her distrust. He contrives a daring plan to win her heart - one that forces her, honor bound, to serve as a slave to his tribe - a plan he prays will protect her from a chilling conspiracy involving murder, blood money, and a betrayal of their fledgling colony so terrifying it can only be revealed in Breaking Ties.

My Review:

**No Spoilers**

I have to be honest, it's many years since I read a historical drama and had actually forgotten how much I enjoyed them. This novel was no exception.

The promise of a new world, a new life and a new beginning.  If only it were that simple for Rose Payne our heroine. She boards the Lyon, destined for the new colony as the ships clerk, however what should have been a straight forward and simple voyage [as much as one could have been back then]  all is not what it seems. Her brothers hard pressed cryptic warning as she boards the ship plays heavily on her mind as a series of  unfortunate circumstances unravel as the fateful journey progresses.  Mystery, intrigue and a dastardly conspiracy surround her at every turn as well as the threat of starvation, sickness, native hostiles and the betrayal of the entire colony, leaving them all in dire straights. Their only salvation being able to escape the confines of a doomed island settlement.

Jo Grafford has crafted a wonderful story, a plot with more twists and turns than a roller-coaster and a whole host of characters you just can't help but empathize with. I really enjoyed this from start to finish and look forward to reading the next one. So if you're looking for a little historical adventure and romance in your life, read this as I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Well worth 4 Stars **** out of 5!

I hope you enjoyed my review of Jo's novel and I'll be back on Tuesday with another very talented author
