The Sunday Book Review

featuring

Beyond

by

Maureen A. Miller

Book Genre:  YA Science Fiction Romance
Publish date:  Oct. 2012        Publisher: CreateSpace

Book Blurb:

It is the day after Aimee Patterson’s high school graduation. College beckons, as does her dream of becoming an engineer. On an early evening walk, her cocker spaniel charges into the woods on the other side of the pond. Aimee trails after him, and in the stillness of that forest the unthinkable happens. She becomes paralyzed and watches in horror as her hands vanish before her eyes.

Waking to the sound of voices, Aimee realizes that she has been kidnapped. Little does she know how far away from home she is, though. In an attempt to flee her captors, she launches from their confines only to freeze at the view outside the window. The sky is black and filled with stars, and in the distance is a familiar blue globe. The planet Earth.

A group of humans forced to flee their planet after an epidemic destroyed their civilization now travel the galaxies in search of an antidote. Retrieving samples of plant life from every solar system, on this occasion Aimee was accidentally seized instead.

Aimee must learn to avoid the advances of an awkward young scientist who seems intent on dissecting her, as her own fascination turns to the exotic young warrior, Zak. Having fallen in love with Zak, she is now torn with the decision to return to Earth or live beyond the stars.

Author Bio

Maureen's illustrious writing career began in the fourth grade with the blockbuster hit, Super Watermelon Man. Many years later, she evolved into a full-fledged Romantic Suspense author with her first novel, WIDOW'S TALE, which was nominated for a Golden Heart by the Romance Writers of America. A fan of the old Gothic romances, Maureen enjoys the formula of danger, romance, dark cliffs, and sinister houses. All these elements can be found in her romantic thriller, ENDLESS NIGHT. Maureen has now branched out into the Young Adult genre with her Science Fiction Romance, BEYOND series.

Author Interview:

Hi Maureen and welcome to my blog!

Firstly can you tell us about yourself?

I come from a distant planet… Okay, well, I’m sure there are people that will tell you that. Probably anyone I went to school with. I admit to being one of those with their ‘head in the stars’.  It might account for all the walls I’ve walked into. So with such an imagination, writing was the logical next step for me. With the BEYOND series, I can keep my head in the stars and have a valid excuse.

Have you published any other novels, if so can you share the details?

My origins were actually in romantic suspense. My first endeavour into writing was a novel called WIDOW’S TALE, which was nominated for a Golden Heart in Romantic Suspense by the Romance Writers Of America.  The follow-up to WIDOW’S TALE was a thriller called ENDLESS NIGHT.  I like lobster.  Both these books took place in a lobster fishing village in Maine. I am currently included in a 12-author romantic suspense anthology called the DANGEROUS DOZEN.

Are you working on anything new right now and can you tell us more?

I am completing a new romantic suspense novel at the moment, but the crew from BEYOND keep tugging on my ear (it’s very distracting), asking me to write book 4.  I just swat at them like mosquitos.

What is/are your all-time favourite novel/s?

Whoah. Tough one.  I’d have to go with Wuthering Heights. Such complex characters.

If you could Time Travel -  what year would you visit and why?

I would like to go back to 1920 or 1930.  Yeah, dump me right back in the great depression. J  I like big band music.  I like the lavish dance halls they used to have back then. And I’d like to see my grandma when she was real young.

Do you have a favourite quote, if so what is it?

There are many, but I have a new one. It is from the movie, Captain Phillips.  When Tom Hanks asks the Somali pirate why he does what he does, he responds, “I have bosses.”  To which Tom Hanks replies, “We all have bosses.”  No truer words were ever said. “We all have bosses.”

How do you come up with the Titles for your novels?

BEYOND seemed logical for what happens to Aimee Patterson. But when the sequel came about, I didn’t want to just call it BEYOND TWO.  Ironically, the second book takes place on a planet with two suns, so BEYOND TWO SUNS was perfect.  Then when the third book came along, I had to keep the scheme. BEYOND THREE PATHS.  Now if I follow the Partridge In A Pair Tree song, my next book will be BEYOND FOUR GOLDEN RINGS. J

If you were stranded on a faraway island:-  which of your characters would you like to be marooned with and why?

Zak.  Why? Well, as Aimee says, “His eyes were like looking into the sun. You knew it was bad for you, but you just couldn’t stop yourself.”

Which of the following suits you best?
a.      Thrill Seeker
b.      Mildly Meek
c.       Totally Chilled
d.      All of the above

Definitely mildly meek.  I was a clarinet player in the marching band. Need I say more? J

My Review:

**No Spoilers**

You may or may not know this, but I am a Sci Fi geek.  Anything outer-space/spacey, to me is seriously awesome, so this novel has absolutely everything going for it as far as I'm concerned.

The writing is faultless, the characters are very likable and engaging.  The plot is unique, exciting and keeps the pages turning at a very brisk pace.  The character development and relationships are well thought out and skillfully planned.

So when Aimee, our heroine accidentally gets abducted and finds herself on an alien spaceship she meets Zak, a 'human-esque' young warrior and love blossoms between to the two after she discovers she's aboard the craft for the next 5 years until it finally returns to earth, however there is another who is obsessed with Aimee and he has his own agenda of what he'd like to do with her.

The world-building is superb as you get sucked into the vivid creation of Maureen A. Millers mind, lost in a story with some great twists and turns.

I hate to give things away and spoil the story for other readers, so I'm going to say this, if you love Sci Fi read it, you won't be disappointed!

My Rating is 5 Stars

*****

[I'm already onto book II - awesome!!]

  4. Apparently everything was grey during the depression. I think I'd like to go back to a more colourful time.
